Heart Rate Trends: Rest, Activity and Measurement Context

Heart rate changes with activity, emotion, sleep, temperature and health status. Interpretation should combine context with longer-term patterns.

Separate resting and active readings

Resting heart rate is observed while awake, calm and inactive. Exercise heart rate varies with age, fitness and intensity; values from different contexts are not directly comparable.

Optical sensors have limits

Band fit, wrist movement, skin contact and exercise type can affect wearable readings. Check the device and repeat unusual measurements while still.

Symptoms take priority

An unusual rate accompanied by chest pain, fainting, significant breathlessness or persistent palpitations needs timely medical assessment.
